Changing the Channel: From Saboteur to Self-Author

The Soundtrack I Didn’t Choose

My life used to feel like it was narrated by a soundtrack I didn’t choose.

The record would scratch every time I dreamed bigger whispering things like:
“You don’t have that in you. You can’t have a steady partner, a nice home, a daring life.”

That voice felt like truth. It carried the weight of history, comparison, and doubt. And yet, it wasn’t truthit was a familiar loop, a groove so deeply etched into my nervous system that I didn’t know there could be another station to tune into.

Living in the Old Channel

For years, I believed that voice.
Each time I compared myself to someone who seemed more confident, more beautiful, more alive, the old soundtrack would pull me back to “reality.”

That “reality” was not the fullness of who I was. It was a story one I had rehearsed so many times that it felt permanent. The more I listened, the smaller my world became.

And maybe you know that feeling too when the background noise of doubt, shame, or self-criticism plays louder than your own inner wisdom.

Learning to Change the Channel

Something shifted when I discovered that the mind is not fixed.
Through somatic practices, relaxed states, and intentional focus, I began to sense that I could change the channel.

Neuroplasticity the brain’s ability to form new connections gives us this freedom. Each time we notice the old loop and gently turn toward a new one, we strengthen a different pathway. With patience and practice, those new pathways become the soundtrack we live by.

Instead of “You can’t,” I’ve learned to hear:

  • “You are worthy.”

  • “You belong.”

  • “You can live into joy and resilience.”

This isn’t about perfection or silencing every doubt. It’s about realizing that I am the author of my inner narrative and that I can keep rewriting it.

Becoming the Self-Author

Your life soundtrack isn’t fixed.
You can re-record it.

You can choose your thoughts and wire your brain to serve the life you want to grow into.

Every time you pause, breathe, and redirect your focus, you are strengthening your self-author voice. Over time, that voice becomes the background music of your life the one that supports, steadies, and expands you.
